FRIDAY Morning - Ballycastle

Bonamargy Friary

15 mins

A guided tour led by Thomas McErlean, a renowned archaeologist who will both educate and entertain you!

Bonamargy Friary is a ruined 15th century friary that has been a State Care monument since 1933.

This was a Third Order Franciscan Friary, founded by Rory MacQuillan circa1500, and was involved in warfare in the late 16th century, but was repaired and used until the mid 17th century.

The 17th-century chapel and vault hold the burial place of the MacDonnells, Earls of Antrim and there are many interesting gravestones in the surrounding cemetery, including memorials for sailors from the two world wars.
